It's no use having a beautifully designed website with a fantastic product to sell if no-one ever drops by to take a look at what you have to offer ! So the whole business of finding ways to drive visitors, or traffic (as we call it), to your website is an issue of prime importance to anyone trying to find ways to make money online ! This is called Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO for short, and you will find encyclopaedic volumes of information on this subject out there on the net - not to mention countless organisations who will promise to launch your search engine rankings into the stratosphere in next to no time, in return for a sizeable fee or monthly subscription ! There are two main types of SEO - one is called On Page and the other Off Page ...On Page SEO is all about the way in which you put your website (or blog) together. It involves the skilful choice, placement and formatting of keywords, and keyword phrases, that you insert into the the title tags, meta tags, and header tags of your site; and that you also weave into the main body of your content. The objective is to convince Google and others that your website is just what surfers are looking for, when they type in search terms matching, including, or even simply forming part of, your keywords ! One of the keys to success here is to select keywords, and/or keyword phrases, which are popular with surfers, but which are not overused by your competitors. In other words, your keywords need to relate to search terms that are frequently used by surfers, but which do not produce too large a list of results when typed into a search engine. So, as you can see, if you want to have good on page SEO, you will need to carry out some smart keyword research in the first place ! Off Page SEO is about building credible links from other websites which point towards your own.The more of these links that Google and others discover, as their spiders and robots trawl the pages of the world-wide web, the more important and influential they will come to believe your site is - and the more prominence they will start to give your website in their list of search results ! So how do you build quality links from other websites to your own ? Well, you can begin by submitting your URL to online Link Directories for inclusion in their directory listings. It's a bit like the online equivalent of Yellow Pages. There is no guarantee that your site will be accepted, and they will usually ask for a backlink to their site in return. It's best to avoid the backlink if possible, because Google tends to regard reciprocal links as a trade-off, a ploy to boost your search engine rankings by artificial means ! The business of submitting your site to hundreds of online directories can be extremely tedious if you do it yourself. There are companies out there who will offer to do it for you, but they work out rather expensive. So it's Brad Callen to the rescue again ! A useful spin-off from successful link directory submissions is that, quite apart from the beneficial effect that it should have on your search engine rankings, it will probably lead more directly to an increase in the number of visitors to your website. Why ? Quite simply because people will find your entry in the link directory listings, and if they like what they see, will probably decide to pay you a visit ! Another way to build quality links back to your website is to write (or have written for you) articles which are relevant to the content of your website, and to submit them to carefully selected online Article Directories - namely, those which publish material likely to be of interest to the type of person that you would like to attract to your website. This is called Article Marketing. The article will contain a link to the URL of your own website - so if people like your article, they may decide to click on the link, to see what else you have to say on your website. Still better than this, the whole thing can become viral - because the publishers of email newsletters, who are constantly on the lookout for fresh original content, are allowed to reprint your articles, provided that they do not alter or edit the content in any way, and preserve the links back to your URL as live 'clickable' links. And that's not the end of it, because the search engines themselves love the Article Directories - and a well-written and cleverly optimised article may well show up in the search engine results for keywords and topics that are related to the content of your article. If it does - then the fact that the article has direct links back to your own URL will inevitably drive further traffic to your website. What's more, when the search engines find a host of one-way links from articles in reputable Article Directories pointing back to your website, they will be suitably impressed and more inclined to give your website a higher ranking in their search listings ! Search Engine Optimisation is essentially free, but no matter how good your SEO, there is no guarantee that it will take you to the top, or even onto page one, of a search engine results listing. You can however pay for the privilege of appearing on the first page of results for search engines such as Google, or Yahoo, or Bing ! It's called pay per click advertising, or PPC for short, and it allows you to have ads displayed on the first page of the search engine's list of search results. On Google, these paid ads appear above and to the right-hand side of the 'free' listing of organic search results. Each ad has a clickable link which will usually take a visitor to a landing page on your website, where they will find more detail of the product that you are promoting. From there, if they are happy with what they see, they can click through to the sales page of the product, and hopefully make a purchase. Unlike most other forms of advertising, you don't have to pay a flat fee or rental to place your ad, you simply pay an agreed amount every time that someone clicks on your ad ! The way it works is that you sign up to the search engine's PPC advertising programme - for example, Google Adwords - and submit to them a list of keywords, and keyword phrases, that your prospective customers are likely to use when searching for a product or service like yours. The idea is that when someone types one of your keywords into their search box, your ad will be displayed on the first page of search results. The precise position of your ad on the page, or whether it appears on the first page at all, is determined partly by your CPC (cost-per-click) bid, which is all to do with the amount that you are prepared to pay Google, or Yahoo, or Bing, each time that someone clicks on your ad. The more competitive the keywords on which you are bidding, the more you will have to pay to secure a position of prominence on the page of search results. So how do you work out exactly how much you can afford to bid ? Well, that all depends on the conversion rate that you expect to achieve from clicks on your ad - i.e. what proportion of the visitors that click on your ad (to visit your website) will actually end up purchasing the product ! And since the conversion rate that you will actually achieve is an unknown quantity at the outset, you don't need to be a genius to work out that you could lose your shirt on the project ! And that is exactly what does happen to more than 95% of those who get involved in PPC - it really is a minefield ! But the relatively low proportion who do well are often spectacularly successful ! The good news is that there are some great programs out there which can dramatically improve your prospects with Google Adwords, and other PPC programs.
